Title of the map. Large antique copper engraved map of ALSATIA (France), centered on Strasbourg, by. Mathaeus MERIAN was a Swiss engraver, he worked in Francfort (Germany). He is the father of the painter of flowers and insects Anna Maria Sybilla Merian. Topographiae Germaniae has been edited in 16 volumes, from 1642 to 1654. After the death of Matthaeus Merian, his two sons Matthaeus Merian le Jeune, and Gaspard Merian, continued the work of their father, and produced other volumes untill 1688, with other descriptions in Europe, as France “Topographiae Galliae”, Rome (1681), and Italy (1688). Gaspard Merian produced Topographiae Galliae, which contains 92 maps, 1486 copper engraving plates with 2142 views of cities, castles, villages, monasters. Gaspard Merian used the engravings of Nicolas Tassin. And of Israel Silvestre, the famous French engraver. It is possible that Israel Silvestre approved the Merian process and even that he was remunerated by him. This supposition is based on the fact that the day of the death of Silvestre on October 11, 1691 was found in his artist’s workshop in the Louvre, the Merian topographies concerning Germany and France. What strikes in the work of Merian is the uniformity of the productions. He probably realised the whole, including the maps. He even renewed the rare bird’s-eye views, borrowed from the books of his father, and we find there the marks so characteristic of his processes, of his work so careful. Many contemporary historical or geographical works were inspired by the views of Merian cities. Size with margins : 34,5 x 28,5 cm / 13,3 x 11 inches. Condition : very good condition, in colors.
